"Walk With Us To Fight Suicide" Event To Take Place In Philippi

The Philippi Courthouse Lawn will be the site of an event aimed at raising awareness and support for suicide prevention. On September 14, 2024, at 10 a.m. the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) West Virginia chapter is hosting the "Out of the Darkness" community walk, inviting everyone to come together and make a difference in the fight against suicide.

The event is part of a nationwide movement that seeks to reduce the stigma around mental health and provide a platform for people to share their stories and support one another. The Philippi walk will not only be a time for community members to connect and show solidarity, but also an opportunity to raise vital funds for AFSP's research, education, advocacy, and support programs.

According to recent statistics, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 45,000 Americans losing their lives to suicide each year. In West Virginia alone, suicide rates are above the national average, with the state losing hundreds of residents to suicide annually. Behind each statistic is a person, a family, and a community forever changed.

AFSP aims to reduce the national suicide rate by 20% by 2025 through these community-focused events, where funds raised go towards educational programs, policy advocacy, and research on effective interventions. Last year, the “Out of the Darkness” walks collectively raised over $21 million nationwide, showing the incredible power of community involvement.
