Halloween spirit is alive and well in Barbour County, with a whirlwind of spooky and festive events taking place in the area. From trunk-or-treat extravaganzas to traditional trick-or-treating, the county is abuzz with activities to celebrate the most spine-tingling night of the year.
The Halloween festivities began last weekend with the highly anticipated annual Audra Trunk-or-Treat event. Families gathered for an evening filled with creative costumes and delicious treats. One of the highlights of the event was the naming of the Pumpkin Court, where young royalty was crowned to reign over the Halloween season.
On Tuesday, the Fairgrounds Trunk-or-Treat, presented by Shop n Save, took center stage. The event boasted participation from almost 60 local businesses and organizations, providing a centralized location for children to showcase their costumes and fill their goody bags. The Fairgrounds Trunk-or-Treat has been growing in size year after year, and it's becoming a staple for families in the area.
Olive Hill Church will continue the Halloween fun with their trunk-or-treat event on October 28, from 5-7 p.m. It's a perfect opportunity for families to gather, enjoy some treats, and show off their Halloween finery.
For those looking for a unique spin on traditional Halloween activities, Artefaktual Comics and Games will sponsor a "Trunk-or-Read" event on Sunday. The event will take place in the parking lot in front of the shop from Noon to 6 p.m. In addition to trunk-or-treating, the event will feature costume judging and a variety of vendors, making it a delightful twist on Halloween celebrations.
The same night, Skatezone in Belington will host Halloween Skate Party from 2-4 p.m. There will be prizes, snacks, and $1 skate rentals alongside $6 admission
As the week progresses, all eyes are turning to Halloween night, October 31. Both Philippi (5:30-7 p.m.) and Belington (6-7:30 p.m.) will host traditional trick-or-treat events.
In Philippi, the trick-or-treat festivities have become become a beloved tradition in downtown for local businesses and residents to line the streets, from the Covered Bridge to the bypass, handing out candy and spreading Halloween cheer. Local neighborhoods are also getting in on the fun, inviting families to stop by and join in the merriment.
Downtown Philippi will be transformed into a Halloween wonderland, with Courthouse Square adorned with spooky decorations, and the Philip Barbour High School will present a one-of-a-kind interactive theater play at the Courthouse Square. For those seeking memorable photo ops, The Nook and the gazebo will be specially decorated for the occasion.
Costume judging, sponsored by the Philippi Lions Club, will take place in the Walgreens parking lot. After the judging, participants will join an impromptu parade to the Courthouse, where the winners will be announced. The courthouse square will be the epicenter of Halloween fun, with activities for all ages.
The costume judging and a Halloween party in Belington will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Golden Rule Building. The trick-or-treat after party will last till about 8:45 p.m.
This weekend and Tuesday promise to be ton of fun, so dress up and head out to enjoy the festivities!
