Residents of Philippi and the northeastern communities of Barbour County are advised to prepare for a scheduled power outage on Monday, November 25, 2024. According to the utility provider, the outage will start early in the morning, around 7 a.m., and is expected to last at least eight hours, though it could extend longer depending on the scope of the maintenance work. This outage will be affecting all City of Philippi customers and Mon Power Customers in the North Eastern section of Barbour County. These areas include Tacy, Nestorville, Moatsville, Clemtown, Cove Run, Valley Furnace, Arden, Kalamazoo, among others that are located in the northeastern portion of Barbour County.

The scheduled outage is necessary to perform critical infrastructure improvements that will enhance the reliability and efficiency of the power grid. Officials are urging residents and businesses in the affected areas to make preparations to minimize the impact of the disruption. Preparations now can greatly improve how you are affected by this scheduled power outage event.

Preparing for the Power Outage

To help residents and businesses in Philippi and northeastern Barbour County, officials have provided the following tips to ensure everyone is prepared:

Charge Essential Devices: Charge phones, laptops, and other essential electronic devices in advance, as they may be needed during the outage.

Gather Flashlights and Batteries: Keep flashlights and extra batteries handy to avoid the risk of using candles, which can pose a fire hazard.

Stock Up on Water and Non-Perishable Food: Consider filling containers with water and having a supply of non-perishable foods that don’t require heating or refrigeration.

Keep Refrigerators and Freezers Closed: Minimizing the opening of refrigerators and freezers will help keep food cool for a longer period.

Get Ready Early: Getting ready for work that day may require you to wake up earlier than usual to ensure you have power to prepare yourself for the work day.

Plan Alternative Work Arrangements: If you work from home or use power-dependent equipment, plan ahead for alternative workspaces or arrangements.

Special Precautions for Residents Relying on Oxygen

For residents who depend on oxygen for medical reasons, this scheduled outage could be especially challenging. It’s crucial to:

Ensure emergency oxygen supplies are fully charged or available for use during the outage.

Contact your oxygen supplier ahead of time to discuss backup options if you’re uncertain about supply duration.

Consider staying with family or friends who may have a generator or other power source.

If you have any additional medical needs that depend on power, now is the time to make arrangements to avoid disruption to your care.
