Save the Tygart Watershed Association is spreading the Christmas spirit this holiday season by sharing the story of Casey the Christmas Caddis. Members of STTWA enjoyed sharing the story, Casey’s Winter Dream, along with a macroinvertebrate-themed Christmas craft project at the Philippi Christmas parade and with kindergartners at Philippi Elementary. Written and illustrated by Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area Americorps member Kelly Smalley, Casey’s story introduces children to the fascinating habits of the case-building caddisfly (an important water-quality indicator). Kids can build and decorate their own caddis cases for the holiday season. You can share this book and craft activity with a youngster in your life by visiting https://www.savethetygart.org/fun-activities.
You can enter your child’s Christmas Caddis in our contest until Friday, December 20, by sending their name, age, and picture of their creation to Americorps@savethetygart.org or by messaging Save the Tygart on Facebook. Winners will be announced on Monday, December 23. STTWA would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season.
