On Friday morning, Barbour County Chamber of Commerce sponsored breakfast with legislators at Laurel Mountain Inn in Belington, and some 30 people from the local business community showed up for Q&A session with legislators representing Barbour County - Senators Bill Hamilton and Robbie Morris and Delegate Chris Phillips. Present was also recently elected President of the Senate, Randy Smith, who used to represent Barbour County before redistricting was done. Legislators laid out the agenda for the 2025, and two of the top priorities were education and small businesses.
Chamber President Ed Larry also announced that the next Chamber Community session will be on February 10, with presenter Larry Gore from Arch Coal. More details to come. With the recent developments at Leer South campus, Chamber is hoping to get updated info on February 10.
Leer Mine is now sealed and will remain sealed for 90 days. More updates will be forthcoming in recent weeks, but what is known is that MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) requires 90 days of closure before work may be resumed and while investigation is complete.
Arden Community Center will be hosting Valentine's Day Dinner on February 8 for couples 15 years of age or older. The cost is $25 per person, and you may message Tara Mitchell-Graham on Facebook for reservations.
Create Philippi organization will meet on Tuesday, February 11 at 6 p.m. at 17 North Event Center. Anyone wanting to get involved more in helping with beautification of Philippi or organization of events should come to the meeting!
PBHS FBLA is selling raffles for Valentine's basket. If you are interested, contact PBHS FBLA on their Instagram or Facebook pages. Future Business Leaders of America group at our high school has exponentially grown in the last several years, and has continuously won awards at the state level and sent large contingents of students to the national competitions. Their fundraiser supports travel to the nationals.
