The Philippi Public Library offers many activities for children. The library offers Preschool Story Hour on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. from September through May. Library staff member Kathy Ammons, “Miss Kathy,” teaches the program. Preschool-age children enjoy hearing stories, playing games, singing songs, and making art and craft projects. The parents and caregivers take an active role in helping the children with hands-on activities.

The library staff is challenging all Barbour County parents and caregivers to register their preschool age children for two programs that provide books and other incentives to the children. They are 1000 Books Before Kindergarten and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
1000 Books Before Kindergarten encourages reading to children before entering kindergarten and is designed to help parents and children get in the habit of reading on a regular basis to improve language and pre-reading skills. Registration forms, tracking forms, and packets are available at the library. Any child from birth to kindergarten is eligible. For every 100 books read to a child, the child may receive a prize consisting of a book or a toy. There are also T-shirts when the child reaches 500 and 1000 books read.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library, serving area children from birth to five years old, provides them with a free, age- and developmentally-appropriate book mailed monthly to their residence. Registration forms are available at the Philippi Public Library. The child must meet the age requirements and reside in Barbour County.
For more information about these or other children’s programs, please contact the Philippi Public Library at 304-457-3495 or stop by the circulation desk.
