Philippi Public Library Resumes Book Club

The Philippi Public Library will resume its monthly book club on Monday, May 13, 2024. The book club is open to the public and allows patrons to expand their knowledge of books through meaningful discussions with others. The library is offering two times on second Mondays for book club so that patrons may choose – 10:30 a.m. to approximately noon and 4:30 to approximately 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be available.

The selection for May is “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. The beautifully written novel is about a blind French girl, Marie-Laure, and a German boy, Werner, whose paths collide in occupied France as they both try to survive the devastion of World War II. When the Nazis occupy Paris, Marie-Laure and her father flee to Saint Malo on the Brittany coast, where Marie-Laure’s agoraphobic great uncle Etienne lives in a house by the sea. Werner, a German grows up with his younger sister Jutta in an orphanage. Finding that he has talent in building and fixing radios, the Germans place him at an elite and brutal military academy, and ultimately he is given the duty of being a specialized tracker of the Resistance which lands him in Saint Malo.

Doerr deftly interweaves the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner and illustrates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Anthony Doerr won a Pulitzer Prize for “All the Light We Cannot See.” He is also the author of other books and short stories.
