The historic town of Philippi is gearing up for the much-anticipated Blue and Gray Reunion, set to take place from Thursday, May 30, to Sunday, June 2. This annual event commemorates the first land battle of the Civil War, which took place in Philippi, and offers a wide array of activities for history enthusiasts, families, and visitors of all ages.
The festivities kick off on Thursday at 8 a.m. with set-up and health inspections. By 3 p.m., the Crafts and Food Court at Courthouse Square will open, offering a variety of local crafts and delicious food options until 9 p.m. The official opening ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. at the Gazebo, followed by a silent auction and live entertainment by Full Cirkle from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Friday’s activities start early with the silent auction opening at 9 a.m. and running until 7 p.m. The Crafts and Food Court will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., providing ample time for attendees to explore. History buffs can enjoy a Walking History Day, presentations, and demonstrations throughout the day, including a reenactment of Hanger's amputation and a display of an 1803 doctor's kit.
Highlights include the Parade on Main Street at 7 p.m., followed by more live entertainment by Electric Blue at the Gazebo from 8 to 10 p.m.
Saturday promises a full day of activities starting with the Belington Elementary 5K registration at 7 a.m. and the race at 8:30 a.m. The Crafts and Food Court remain open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and various camps will be accessible to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Children can participate in the Little Soldiers Battle at 10:15 a.m., while adults can enjoy a Ladies’ Tea at 10:30 a.m. Pre-registration is required for both events. The day will be packed with entertainment, including performances by Jim Snyder, Joel Franks, and Acoustic Fusion. The evening culminates with a Square Dance at 7 p.m. and night cannon fire and skirmish at the Covered Bridge from 10 to 10:30 p.m.
The final day begins with Reveille at 8 a.m. and a Commander's Meeting at 9 a.m. The Crafts and Food Court will be open until 2 p.m., and attendees can join the 1861 Church Service at the Gazebo at 10 a.m. or participate in the Blue and Gray Paddle at the Covered Bridge.
The highlight of the weekend is the reenactment of the First Land Battle at 2 p.m., followed by a final Hanger amputation demonstration at Sutler Row. As the camps close, the town will begin preparations for next year’s reunion, scheduled for May 29 through June 1, 2025.
