October is a very special and busy month at the Philippi Public Library. We have lots of fall programs. Pumpkins, scarecrows, autumn leaves, and some great fall display books will greet our visitors to the library this month. Walk through the library’s fall entrance decorations and come inside to discover the magic that awaits! All of our programs are free but we do ask that you register.
PPL Board of Trustees: By the time of this publishing, the library Board will have already met with the Director and Service Center Director and Assistant Director. The Board meets every first Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the library unless specifically noted otherwise. Meetings are open to the public and the agenda is posted on Thursday of the previous week.
Run For It! On Saturday, September 28, the Bookworms team joined with
other teams to compete for awards in the Tucker Community Foundation’s Run For It! It is too soon to report the final numbers, but the library raised over $16,000 through generous donations, a year of fundraisers, awards, and one-half registration fees for runners and walkers. Watch for final details. We truly appreciate everyone who helped us bring home this money to our local library!
October Closures: The library will be closed to the public on Saturday, October 4, for Staff Development Day, a day of deep cleaning, training, and other activities. We will be here cleaning carpets and upholstery and other cleaning projects as well as other duties. The library will also close in recognition of Columbus Day and Indigenous People Day on Monday, October 14.
Book Sales: The library is having book sales each Friday and Saturday that we are open. Be sure to check out the sale shelves in the book shed and inside the library.
The Secret Garden Workdays: Summer may be over but the garden still needs tending. We have so much going on and need volunteers on Thursday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. or at any other time when we are open. We have scheduled workdays for prep for paver and stepping stones and build a scarecrow for the garden on October 3, lay stepping stones on October 10 and 17, and Clean-Up the Garden on October 24. We will also reschedule the painting of the cinder blocks for benches and prepping the benches since those activities got rained out in October.
Book Club: The library will host another great book club on Monday, October 7, at 10:30 a.m. to approximately noon. We will no longer offer the 4:30 to 6 p.m. session. The book in October is “Rocket Boys” by the well-known West Virginia author and former NASA engineer Homer Hickam. Join Tracy for some sweet treats, coffee, cappuccino, tea, and great conversation about the book.
The Creative Cup: The adults are loving The Creative Cup program and is growing each month! The October project will be marbleized mini-pumpkins. Join Kathy for this exciting fall activity, some sweet treats, coffee, cappuccino, and tea.
Tweens & TeenTober®: TeenTober® is one of our favorite fall events. We have added the Tweens to this event for several years now. The library has a full schedule of activities planned for the month of October. TeenTober® is a national literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) of the American Library Association (ALA. This month-long celebration strives to raise awareness of the importance of year-round teen services, connect teens to the library, and remind them that the library is a fun and educational place to visit “We hope to engage tweens and teens with our Halloween theme activities so they will want to visit the library on a regular basis, check out our materials, and become a VolunTeen!” said Tracy Strother, Tween & Teen Program Coordinator. “We will take volunteers age 16 and older. We also want the input of our youth to help the library stay up-to-date on emerging technology and trending programs as well.”
Tweens & TeenTober® will be on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 to 6 p.m. We will offer our annual Zombie Doll Apocalypse on October 1 in which tweens and teens will deconstruct Barbie and Ken or similar dolls to turn them into zombies. On October 8, they will paint glow-in-the-dark paintings on black canvas. On October 15, they will enjoy some Fall Cooking with Tracy! On October 22, they will create marbleized mini-pumpkins. There will be no program on October 29 due to Trunk or Treat at the Fairgrounds. Throughout the programs, Tracy will feature books about cryptid, ghost stories, and other books for the Halloween season.
Trick or Treat: Speaking of Halloween, the library staff will once again be in front of the library for Trick or Treat on Thursday, October 31, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Literary Pumpkin Contest: The library is hosting its Literary Pumpkin Contest in October. Participant’s may pick up their pumpkins on Monday, October 7, at the library. They must also pick up a registration form and rules sheet. Literary Pumpkins are due on October 21 before 6 p.m. This contest is open to children, tweens, and teens.
