Notes from the Nook: News from Philippi Public Library

by Judy Buckner Larry, Director

We don’t know if March will come in like a lamb or a lion, but what we do know is that the winds will blow in a March with some great activities planned for our Philippi Public Library (PPL) patrons and for newcomers to our hub of information.

Monthly Meeting: On Tuesday, March 5, the PPL Board of Trustees will be meeting at 9 a.m. at the library. Meetings are open to the public and the agenda is posted in advance.

Closures: The library will close on Friday, March 1 for our monthly Staff Development Day and on Friday, March 29, through Sunday, March 31, for Good Friday and Easter weekend.

PPL Fundraisers: The library is already fundraising for our Bookworms Team for the Tucker Community Foundation’s 2024 Run For It! We will have an indoor book sale on Saturdays in March from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We are also having a Spring Lotto Raffle. A winner will be chosen at the end of March.

Services: Tax day is coming soon. We have tax booklets and forms available in the foyer. The library offers a variety of services (faxing, copying, printing, and scanning for nominal fees) in addition to circulation of books, DVDs, magazines, and other materials. We have three notaries available for your convenience. Please call ahead for notary service to make sure one is working at that time. Although this service is free, we gladly accept donations.

Book Display: March is Women’s History Month. To acknowledge it, your public library will have a book display of American women and key events in women’s history.

Saturday Morning Movie: On Saturday, March 9, from 10:30 a.m. to approximately noon, we will show “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.” The 2023 hit movie is rated PG. We’ll provide water and popcorn.

The Creative Cup: We invite everyone to participate in our monthly adult program, The Creative Cup. It is growing and we are so happy about that! Register and join us on Monday, March 11, from 10:30 a.m. until approximately noon. The Creative Cup is an opportunity for adults to create a project, have some great conversation, eat some sweet confections, and drink a cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa, or cappuccino.

This month’s project is the cutest painted and decorated bunny jar. No special artistic skill is required and it is perfect for this time of year. The library will provide all materials and The Creative Cup is free! Director Judy Buckner Larry asks that everyone register so we know how to plan for the program.

PPL hosts a Tweens & Teens programs each month. The March program will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, from 4 – 6 p.m. The tweens and teens will make spring bracelets and make some snacks.

Create with Play-Doh: We will offer two STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs this month. On STREAM Thursday, March 14, and STREAM Saturday, March 16, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, the library will host Create with Play-Doh. Register your child for some squishing, rolling, sculpting, and molding! They love to play with Play-Doh and our many tools. While they are playing, they are also learning new math, science, language skills, and more.

Peep Into Your Favorite Book: In March the library will have Peep Into Your Favorite Book Shoebox Diorama contest. Entries are due by 2 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2024. All characters must be Peeps. Pick up a shoebox, entry form, and instructions at the library. The entries will be judged and announced via Facebook on Tuesday, March 26. We will chose 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The contest is open to children ages 3 through 12. Parents may help but children must do the bulk of the work. Any entries must be picked up by March 28.

Pre-School Story Hour: Our preschoolers will be exploring spring topics during their weekly 10:30 - 11:30 am. Wednesday morning sessions this month. Miss Kathy will be reading stories about song birds, St. Patrick’s Day, spring, and rainbows. Our youngest patrons will be engaged in activities, maybe some crafts, maybe some songs, and always fun activities.

Other Literacy Programs: The library is also registering for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, two very special early literacy programs for preschoolers that include books, toys, and t-shirts for the children! Stop by to register your child today.

We appreciate knowing how many will attend so we can better plan. As always, please let me know how the Philippi Public Library can better serve you and our community.
