Notes From the Nook: News From Philippi Public Library

by Judy Buckner Larry, Director

Library Lovers, Black History Month, talking to our funders, and programs interweave throughout February in your Philippi Public Library. February in the Library gives everyone something to love! We have scheduled so many activities for this month. Please pick up our February calendar so you don’t miss one of them and follow us on Facebook for more information.

It is Library Lovers’ Month! We will celebrate with an informal reception at the library on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Please stop by to have light refreshments and visit the library and library staff, ask questions, and learn more about your library. The library is an essential part of this community and we want you to know more about us.

Also, the library is having fundraisers. When you see one of our Love Your Library jars at a local business, please help us fill the jar! We appreciate the businesses who are participating. If you would like at jar at your location, please give us a call at 304-457-3495. We always have an indoor book sale. Stop by and take advantage of our bag it for bargains!

February is also Chocolate Lovers Month and we are having a Chocolate Lovers Basket raffle. All proceeds to our fundraisers go toward our Bookworms team in the 2024 Run For It. Support your local library!

Free Inter Library Loans: Check out the free inter library loans (ILLs) available to you. If there is a book you want that we do not have on our shelves, we are always happy to request it from another library. Normally we charge $3 per book for the return postage but we are waiving that for this month. This is a great tool for home school families as well as others.

Fine Free Fridays in February. We love alliteration and you will love the fine waivers on any current overdue materials that you return. We cannot waive fines for other libraries, fines already on your record, or charges for unreturned, lost, or damaged books.

Black History Month: Entering the front door of the library, visitors will see our annual display of Black History Month in the foyer display case. Trace the history of this nearly century old celebration which began in 1915 with the founding of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, proceeded to 1926 with the sponsoring of a national Negro History week, and finally to 1976 with President Ford officially recognizing Black History Month.

Abundant milestones and leaders exist from which to pull for this month’s celebration. Learn more about the many contributions of African Americans by stopping and exploring our books and materials.

Dates of Interest: Our Board of Trustees meets monthly at the library. We will have our meeting on Tuesday, February 7, at 9 a.m. The meeting is open to the public and the agenda is posted at the library.

Closings: On Friday, February 2, the library will close to be public for our monthly Staff Development Day during which staff will engage in training, meeting, planning, and extensive cleaning including shampooing carpets, rugs, and upholstery. The library will close on Monday, February 19, in observance of Presidents’ Day.

The library is normally open Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We are usually closed on first Fridays for Staff Development Days. Please follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/PhilippiPublicLibrary for information about closings due to weather or library events.
