Dear Editor,
My name is Lauren Rogers, and I am a resident of Barbour County, WV. I work for the City of Bridgeport and am a member of the Huntington’s Disease National Youth Alliance.
Huntington’s Disease (HD) has and is affecting my family tremendously. My great-grandfather passed away in 2006 from the disease, and my grandmother and mother are currently diagnosed with it. The symptoms of HD are described as having ALS, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s, simultaneously. Symptoms of HD also include personality changes, mood swings, depression, forgetfulness, impaired judgment, unsteady gait, involuntary movements, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and significant weight loss. Each child has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the faulty gene, therefore leaving my brother and I vulnerable.
We are about to host our 3rd Annual Team Hope WV Walk, on Sunday, September 15, 2024. This walk will be held at the Barbour County Fairgrounds, in Belington, WV. Registration is at 2 p.m. with the walk to follow at 3 p.m. All proceeds from these events are sent to The Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) to assist in further research, testing, and studies for a cure for HD.
I ask that if you are reading this, please consider supporting this event with any donation you may be able to contribute. At the walk, we also host a silent auction, and any items donated towards that would be auctioned off at the event. You are also able to be an event sponsor if you would like. All donations are very appreciated! To register for the walk, please visit https://northeast.hdsa.org/events/2024-team-hope-walk-west-virginia.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or if you need help registering.
Thank you for your generosity and support in raising awareness of Huntington’s Disease.
Sincerely,
Lauren Rogers
