Last month, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary celebrated one of its most illustrious graduates, Dr. Yount, by bestowing upon him the Distinguished Alumni/Excellence in Academia Award. This honor recognizes his significant contributions to academia, spanning over several decades, and his unwavering dedication to education and community service. Dr. Yount was present to receive award and was accompanied by 13 of his family members.
Dr. Yount’s educational journey began at Alderson-Broaddus College, where he graduated summa cum laude in Political Science in 1969. He continued his studies at the University of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, earning his M.R.E. cum laude in 1972. His academic achievements culminated with a Ph.D. in Political Science from West Virginia University in 1976.
His professional career at Alderson Broaddus University is marked by a remarkable tenure from 1974 to 2012. Dr. Yount held various positions, including Professor of Political Science and History, Director of the College Honors Program, and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. His leadership and vision helped shape the institution’s academic landscape, benefiting countless students and faculty members.
Throughout his career, Dr. Yount has been the recipient of numerous accolades. In 2013, he was honored for excellence in teaching at the American Political Science Association’s national meeting. His dedication to teaching was further recognized in 2012 when he was chosen by students as Alderson-Broaddus College’s Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year.
Dr. Yount’s influence extends beyond academia. In 2023, he was named Poet Laureate of Barbour County, West Virginia, and in 2015, he earned the title of "Poet Laureate of Antarctica" following a poetry contest among 189 expeditionists.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Yount has been an active participant in various community and professional organizations. He served as president of the Philippi Kiwanis Club, volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, and engaged in foreign mission work in countries such as India, Thailand, and Bolivia.
Dr. Yount’s contributions to literature are equally impressive. He has authored numerous books on history, travel, and government, including "500 Days in Europe" (Volumes I and II) and "The Younts." He has traveled to all 50 states and all seven continents.
His scholarly work includes a textbook on political science and several research publications.
Dr. Yount’s legacy is one of dedication, excellence, and service. His impact on academia and the community serves as an inspiration for future generations of scholars and educators.
