In a display of bravery, 16 individuals took the plunge into the cold waters of the Tygart River as part of the annual Polar Plunge held near the historic Philippi Covered Bridge on New Year's Day. This heartwarming tradition not only kick-starts the new year with a jolt but also serves as a fundraiser for the Barbour County Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
As the clock struck 11:30 a.m., the daring participants, clad in an assortment of colorful beachwear, fearlessly leaped into the frigid waters with gusto. The New Year's Day Polar Plunge has become a rite of passage for those seeking a unique and invigorating way to welcome the year ahead. Spectators, wrapped in layers of warm clothing, gathered along the riverbanks to witness the spectacle.
The weather played its part perfectly, contributing to the festive atmosphere. A blanket of fluffy snow provided a picturesque backdrop for the event, creating a serene contrast to the adrenaline-pumping dives into the icy river. Cheers and applause erupted from the crowd as each participant emerged from the water, their faces a mix of exhilaration and relief.
This year, participants hailed not only from Barbour County, but also from neighboring Taylor County, and as far as Chicago, Illinois.
