Blue And Gray Reunion To Commemorate Philippi Races

By Marija Ilic

History enthusiasts and Civil War aficionados are eagerly anticipating the upcoming Blue and Gray Reunion scheduled to take place in Philippi from May 30 to June 2, 2024. This four-day event is set to commemorate the first land battle of the Civil War, famously known as the Philippi Races.

The highlight of the reunion will be the reenactment set to unfold on Sunday, offering attendees a vivid portrayal of the historic events that transpired on these very grounds more than a century ago. Reenactors, meticulously attired and equipped, will breathe life into the brave soldiers who once clashed on the fields of Philippi.

One notable aspect of this year's reenactment is the representation of the Barbour Mountain Guard, a crucial component of the conflict despite the absence of a Confederate Army during the original battle. "There was no Confederate Army at Philippi. There was no Confederate Army until July," say the event organizers. The Mountain Guards, along with the Barbour Grays, formed a formidable presence during the battle.

The Barbour Mountain Guard, initially organized as the 31st Virginia Infantry, played a pivotal role in various campaigns throughout the Civil War, including Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign and Jackson's Valley operations. Their journey within the Confederate Army, from mustering in July 1861 to enduring the trials of battlefields from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, reflects the tumultuous and arduous nature of the conflict.

Adding to the allure of the reunion are special guests who will grace the event with their presence. General Grant, portrayed by Ken Serfass, and Abraham Lincoln, brought to life by Carl Swick, captivated attendees with their immersive portrayals at the 2023 Blue and Gray Reunion. Their return in 2024 promises another opportunity for visitors to engage with these historical figures and gain insight into their respective roles during this turbulent period in American history.

"We invite one and all to join us in commemorating the legacy of the Philippi Races and honoring the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought here," urge event organizers. As the date draws near, anticipation mounts, promising a weekend filled with education, entertainment, and reverence for the enduring spirit of the Civil War era.

Stay tuned for further details on the schedule and additional attractions in next week's issue as we prepare to embark on this unforgettable journey through history at the Blue and Gray Reunion in Philippi.
